What I have learned from hockey or what Canada has learned!

Ah hockey!! Canada's game, even if "officially" it is lacrosse. How can you have an official game anyways? But that's beside the point. Either way Canada is hockey - hockey is Canada. It is a huge part of my life and most of my friends. When the guys get together, it is what is on the T.V. Or if a video game is on that's what it is. We have framed jerseys and jerseys we wear. Always the day after a game it is the topic over morning coffee break. Either wow what a team or wow how can we suck so much!!! Bars are open at 5 AM, for gold medal games. Maybe this is only an Edmonton thing, but i kinda doubt it. Also Oilers the rebuild is over just stop sucking and do something!!! It doesn't seem like Taylor Hall saved the Oilers or paned out to be a huge deal. I mean Sid, Ovi, Stamkos, Tavares all went to struggling teams and lit it up... Anyways this isn't about my disappointment in the Oilers.

I wouldn't say it is just hockey but that will be my example cause its the sport i love but we all learn from team sports. The first thing is fun! It really isn't hi skill hockey watching 10 "Tim bits" chase a cup, all fall over and chase it some more. It should however be fun and bring them joy. It is sad that as skill grows it seems the fun vanishes and it becomes about making it or getting a bigger contract.

Maybe this whole write up was brought on by the world juniors. They just finished and we just won 2015 gold. If you don't get out of this I am a Canadian hockey give your head a shake, but i am going to say it. We got lucky! Same thing every year. First few games we play and dominate lesser teams. Then we hear how amazing this team is. I swear every year during game 1 and 2 we hear. Canada has never had a team like this before! Look at the skill! Look at the fire power! Then we play some talent and..... Well this year was no different! Russia came within 1, had we not popped 2 quickies in we, would have ended up Silver.

Then is sportsmanship and fair play. Lets be honest, that is Canadian. Good manners, honesty.... I remember kicking a goal in one time. Then a second later admitting it, how could i sleep with that on my chest? And win or lose kids learn to be gracious. Not that losing doesn't suck but you learn that things always don't work out. Also you learn to win the right way, hopefully not gloat or be a cocky ass.

We won a co-ed championship once. It was a dramatic as they come. It went through o.t and it went to a shoot out. Then it went through both teams entire line up. This is drama! So our last shooter was a girl who really wasn't into hockey. Mostly she wanted to hang out with friends. I quote "Imma win this bitch" was what she had said before. Jokingly, and that was how the other goalie took her to as a joke. She won us our only co-ed championship! There are a million lessons people can learn from that. No that isn't some feel good story for readers digest and no i ain't about to break it down to all the lessons people can learn from that.....

Teamwork and loyalty. Fine here is a lesson from the feel good story above, everyone has a use! And working as a team pays off. Its not always the "best" or most flashy player that wins, it is a team effort. Take note Ovi.. Take note. Loyalty, its not just a tattoo on a roid monkeys arm. Playing with people and having each others back is huge in this world. Not only that but what good hockey fan isn't loyal to their team. If your an Oiler fan, it is pretty likely you have said anyone but Calgary. Maybe even lost a bet and had to wear a rivals jersey....

Another fun story about hockey bringing people together,  The same team i was talking about is were i meet my girlfriend. Also two couples that met through that team are now married and have their first children! Without that team, without that sport none of this would have happened. Now it wasn't the time playing in the league that brought people together. It was the street hockey and beer, it was the bbq's that came with being on a team.

I could be overstating but I do think we as a nation and as individuals can learn a lot from team sports and from or national game! PS Taylor Hall still sucks!

Edmonton / Highway of Tears

This was going to be a small paragraph in a bigger random blog but it grew really fast and the fact is I thought it was rather interesting so it will be post of its own. I decided to add some of these womens names. I once heard a pod about Jack the Rippers victims, that humanized them. I think thats what should be done, why glorify freak shows and forget about the people who suffered because of them. Also I added a bit more as I was just going to, just quickly mention Edmonton but I think it is bigger than that. Also still cannot find a legit decent looking charity to donate to for MMIWG.... Msg me if you know one! IS there a serial killer in Edmonton? Or was there one active? On another long drive home I came across podcasts on EPS, which led to pods on what they called the Edmonton - Leduc murders. Which if you have been around Edmonton for awhile I know you have heard of. I just was unaware of the amount and length of time this had been going on. First thing though not all these mur

Alberta Politics Pre 2019 election

Ahh that lovely time every few years when we see the worst in all people is upon us! That's right elections are coming! The brutal truth is both federally and provincially we are going to see shit get nasty. From both sides, let's not pretend anyone is innocent. This is all I am going to say on politics for awhile, at least until elections OR if something crazy happens. I really need to concentrate on actual writing. Not twitter bickering with people. So here is it my thoughts on the current federal and provincial politics. (Breaking this into 2 parts. This one is going to be just media and Alberta) First let's start with the sideliners. The media and the peanut gallery. Rebel Media OR Chicken little media. Whichever you want to call them is fine by me. It has been years now I was blocked for using common sense or not drinking the Kool-aid by Ezzie and the Rebel account. I can say I never dropped into name calling or anything like that with either, but I guess not believi

Part 3 Addiction

So, I have stated first, we need the correct systems in place, and second, we need healthy citizens for a better society. One of the root problems in society, though, is addiction. A mental health problem that can lead to so much more. Family violence, crime, homelessness, job loss, and on and on. There is no cure for addiction. There is management, and there are many things we can do much better to help addicts and society. So, let's tackle this one next.  I like drinking! I like the taste of a good whiskey or red wine. Or the supposed "no taste" of good vodka. I like that little boost of confidence that tells me, hell ya, you can dance! Or the fact that, yes, after a long day, it does take an edge off. I have a ton of great memories of times when booze was around... The flip side of that is I'm not too fond of hangovers. I hate not knowing what happened the night before; I guess there is a term for this now: hangxiety. Some of my worst memories and things I hate abo
