This post was just gonna be a quick one on The Last Jedi. But my thought train went off the tracks again so we have a bit more to it. Hollywood you suck! First off apparently everyone, except maybe Keanu Reeves and Tom Hanks is a rapist. But we are not even gonna get on that story. My rant is there is nothing new or more stolen currently out there to watch. I love Marvel Studios. I am so pumped for Avengers Infinity War. You would think this golden age of nerds I would be smiling but I slowly am not. It could be Disney milking the Marvel universe no wait, it is exactly that. Ant Man? Doctor Strange? All this is a cash grab. Now they own the Mutants too? While this should be super exciting and the set up for amazing series, you know this is about to be milked dry. Quantity over Quality. Look at Iron Man. It started it all and was amazing by Iron Man 3 I was asking please just stop.... Spiderman has been relaunched 3 times! DC is getting on the train too and why not it is money for them. Preacher, The Walking dead both taken from graphic novels. Think about it what was the last big movie that wasn't a sequel OR comic / nerd based.... Jurassic World was a preview last night again a sequel of a sequel. Star Trek has been restarted.... Pirates of the Caribbean is up to 5 now? It should have stopped after 3. All I really am trying to express is COME ON! Let's get some new ideas! Nerds have waited decades to be main stream, let's not have Disney ruin the culture by over doing it. Hell even Harry Potter has spin offs in the works.
Going to the movies is insane now by the way. $$$$. I will admit we paid for D box seats which now in my mind is the only way to see action movies but $50 to go out without even buying a snack is crazy. Oh and commercials WTF? It was honestly 15 minutes from the time the movie was supposed to start until the previews actually started. Previews! It used to be previews then movie not... Credit card commercials, cars ads, Coke ads... Come on I just came to see Luke Freaking Skywalker!! Timeplay is cool though, that was a great idea.
So The Last Jedi started..... Big spoilers ahead so don't say you weren't warned...... (Also I apologize for character spelling errors)
Lets talk Star wars. 4,5,6 were amazing, for there time. Had they been made with the effects of today. All these kids who think 1,2,3 are amazing would be mind blown. I am not going to go in depth into 4,5,6 cause in my mind they are the classics. Without them the prequel crap couldn't exist. That trilogy relied on great story telling. 1,2 and 3 are just bad. Face facts, they made them because they had the tech to do some neat shit on screen. Yes there is some good stories. Even though I hated Anakin, the second and third movies actually made Vaders story a tragic but good tale. How the Empire seized power was also neat to see, instead of them just being unbeatable bad guys seeing the rise was good. Seeing the Jedi order was neat, and of course Sam Jackson was in it, like every movie ever made. But shit like Jar Jar was just awful. Then came this new trilogy, I am hoping it can combine both. I mean 7 The Force Awaken had great effects and the story was good but it seems like a direct remake of A New Hope. My biggest beef with that one is Rei can just close her eyes say "Force" and fight Kylo who has trained his whole life??? Come on... Oh and that Rogue One movie, I always forget about it. Not that it is bad. I actually liked it BUT wtf??? Most depressing Star Wars to date.
Right off the bat, too much attempted humor. Luke tossing the Light Sabre right off the bat made a couple people chuckle. I didn't, it was one of a few times they tried and failed on jokes. Yes there are a few parts that make one laugh but there are a lot of attempts that are swing and a miss.
The Force Awakens could have been called A New Hope (But starting a girl) I am very glad this one was different than Empire. I mean there is some very similar plots. Like the Empire almost winning and that first escape and the last battle are very close to Hoth but this one wasn't an exact clone. I can't handle the emo Skywalkers. Luke spends too much of this movie whining. And Kylos little tantrum smashing his mask..... But I do like that fact that shitty helmet is gone! Along with that I cannot picture Luke Jedi hero, firing up the light sabre at a sleeping child. to me that part is pretty weak.
Leia (not sure if that is the right spelling) her pulling herself back to the ship ya.... Not a huge fan. I know she is a Skywalker blah blah blah but come on. That coulda been a good write out for her. Kylo couldn't do it (blow her up) but she still could have been gone. Hate to say it but it is the right thing to do. Han, Luke, Leia they all have to go. Not cause I wanna see them go but they have aged. If you are going to keep making these movies it can't be like comics were everyone can stay the same age forever. Actors do age....
I missed the whole Casino scene. I got up for a pee by the time I came back Finn and Rose were in jail. So really other than giving that kid from the final scene the Rebel ring I have no idea what the point of that was. That and Benicio Del Toro getting introduced. I am going to say Del Toro is an amazing character. I know I don't go to Star Wars for a "deep thought provoking" movie but he does make a few good points. At first I was worried he was going to be a terrible Han rip off BUT shit like pointing out to Finn the arms Dealer was selling to both sides and Good and Evil are perspectives was awesome. While I don't think we will see him again I loved him in this. Someone I don't like and hope is gone for good is Cpt Phasma. She really has had no significant part in the story... Oh and Hux. I mean to me he is a cardboard villain.
One of the great thing about the originals was the Muppet's. I think they are reaching for that again. Which is too bad, you don't always need new creatures. But it was cool to see a droid could work for the bad guys. I mean it only makes sense.
Lets get right to it, the Force! And a couple huge disappointments. I freakin loved Luke not being there! When he gets blasted and walks away I thought that was way too cheesy. I thought Kylo holding a blast in the opening of the last movie was cheesy too. But the fact he was just a projection, made it all make sense and that was awesome. The whole Rei falling into the "darkside" pit thingy and nothing happening seemed lame. But of course the Yoda cameo and blowing up that tree was awesome!! How about Snoke though. That was a freakin huge letdown. So he is so powerful he can make Rei and Kylo talk across the galaxy but doesn't sense what Kylo is really doing? Plus there was sooooo much potential for him. Great back story how he started the First Order or why he is so Force strong but it appears he is just gone.... I mean maybe they will have more in the next one but if not that is just lame. That whole death scene just brought back Return of the Jedi. Same with Rei. Part of me is glad she is not a Skywalker. I mean who didn't think she was somehow tied into that family. Part of me thought it would be a breath of fresh air, a nice change. But for her to just be some random person whose family is dead and buried in a "paupers grave" after hints she was left there for some reason kinda hurts. Like meh we aren't really gonna try. Hell I would have settled for her being fatherless like Ani. They could have said she was the Light answer to a extremely powerful dark rising. I mean maybe that was a lie by Kylo and I really hope so.
There is much more I could say but I am not about to break it down scene by scene. Just the things I thought. It gets a 7.5 out of 10. Well worth the D box seat.
